Membership
Mixed Breed Dog Club of California (MBDC of CA) members are a diverse group spread primarily over the greater San Francisco Bay Area in northern California. We are involved in a wide range of activities from showing in obedience, rally, and conformation to hiking, participating in parades, and helping in the community with therapy dogs. Our members' dogs are just as diverse, from big to small, light to dark, and everything in between!
Become a Member
There are several types of membership available in the MBDC of CA:
- Individual Participating Membership
- Anyone who wishes to register and show one or more mixed-breed dogs may apply for an Individual Participating Membership. With a Participating Membership you can earn all the ribbons, titles, and special awards given by the California Chapter (MBDC of CA) and the National Club (MBDCA). You will also receive both the quarterly chapter and national newsletters and will be entitled to vote in chapter and national club matters.
- Family Participating Membership
- Same as Individual Participating Membership, but includes two or more people in a family.
- Disabled or Senior Participating Membership
- Same as Individual Participating Membership, but includes a discount for senior citizens or people with disabilities (proof required for both).
- Supporting Membership
- Anyone who is not planning on showing a dog, but would like to support the MBDC of CA's efforts to provide titling opportunities for mixed-breed dogs in California as well as the club's goal of responsible dog ownership may apply for a Supporting Membership. As a Supporting Member, you will receive the quarterly chapter newsletter and are entitled to vote in club matters.
Applying for Membership
To apply for membership, just fill out the Membership Application Form and submit it along with the appropriate dues (see dues table below for amounts).
Once the application has been submitted, you will be sent a welcome packet including a membership roster, the most recent newsletter, and, for Participating Members, the current MBDCA rules and regulations for all events.
Here are some things you should consider before applying to the MBDC of CA for membership and registration of your dog(s):
- The MBDC of CA welcomes all mixed bred dogs, and those pure purebreds or rare breeds that are not eligible to compete through the AKC or UKC. However, we do require that all dogs must be made sterile (spayed, neutered, or otherwise made sterile) and proof given. The primary goal of our organization is to promote responsible dog ownership through obedience and discourage the breeding of non-show quality dogs.
- If you know or think your dog is a purebred, you can apply to the AKC for an Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) or Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) number. This will allow you to show in obedience classes at AKC trials. The MBDC of CA will not register a dog that can qualify for an ILP number unless a copy of the ILP denial form for the AKC is received along with the MBDC of CA application.
- If you have a purebred dog which is blind, deaf, lame or otherwise does not qualify for AKC trials, we will register your dog. You may compete for titles, however, it is left up to the judge to determine if the dog is physically able to compete.
- If you have a breed of dog that is not now accepted by the AKC or UKC, the MBDC of CA will register your dog, but we will still require your dog to be made sterile. If you are trying to establish the breed in this country, you may want to register your dog with the breed's national club.
Membership Renewal
Membership is renewed annually in October by paying the membership dues amount to the head of the Membership Committee. Participating members are entitled to vote in the annual election in the spring (at the Spring Fling), provided their dues are paid before the meeting is called to order.
Membership Dues
Annual dues are paid in October of each year. For new members, dues are prorated based on the time period in which you join. Renewing members pay the October amount for their annual dues. Renewing Supporting Members pay the full amount, while renewing Participating Members of any kind (individual, family, senior, or disabled) pay the October amount less the $5 one-time dog registration fee included in new-member dues.
