About the Mixed Breed Dog Club of California

The Mixed Breed Dog Club of California (MBDC of CA) is a not-for-profit organization that is the local chapter of the Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America (MBDCA) for the state of California. The MBDCA is a national organization that offers registration to mixed breeds as well as to those purebreds that cannot compete in AKC, UKC, or ASCA trials.

The MBDC of CA and MBDCA require that all registered dogs be spayed, neutered, or otherwise made sterile. MBDC of CA also strongly advocates basic obedience training for all dogs. See our frequently asked questions for more details about the MBDC of CA. If you are interested in joining the MBDC of CA, we'd love to have you! See our membership information section for more details on joining the club.

Titling Activities Available

The MBDCA provides a set of regulations for competition that meet the unique needs of mixed breeds while still fitting in at fun matches and workshops. Many of the regulations are similar to those of the AKC. Titles can be earned in obedience, rally, conformation, tracking, lure coursing, retriever instinct, and versatility.

Annual Events

The MBDC of CA holds several events each year:

  • A Mini Mutt Match for obedience and conformation in February
  • The Spring Fling, the annual membership meeting and day of fun and games for members and their guests, in May
  • A Mini Mutt Match for rally and conformation in June
  • An Agility Fun Match - our annual fund raiser open to all agility enthusiasts - in August
  • A Mini Mutt Match for obedience, rally, and conformation in September
  • The Regional Specialty, including obedience, rally, and conformation in October

History of the Club

The Mixed Breed Dog Club of California was founded in 1982 by Connie Nelson and Diane Fiedor, four years after the national club was founded in Washington. The club held its first specialty on September 12, 1982 at Halcyon Park in San Leandro and hosted the national specialty the following year. The club began holding a large obedience workshop in 1987 as a fundraiser. It was held annually until 2002 when the set up work became too much for the shrinking club to handle. In 2004, the club began holding "Mini Mutt Matches" - small, one-ring events for members to have the opportunity to earn legs and show in conformation. Rally became a titling event in 2005, and the club has seen many new members join to participate in this fast-growing sport. For more details about the club's history, visit the history page.
